Social Moguls
A “Social Mogul” is a person who exerts their power and influence for the collective good of society – their reward is happiness.
Social Moguls is a youth leadership development program of The Happiness Initiative; the goal is to inspire and engage a movement of youthful creative problem solvers, innovative thinkers, confident communicators and collaborators working toward and enduring, resilient, just and happy society. Social Moguls is comprised of the Social Moguls University and Peer Leadership Council; both grounded in the principles and framework of the 10 domains of happiness and use the HI survey as an evaluative tool in the program. Social Moguls participants will take the survey pre and post to measure the programs impact in the 10 domains of happiness. Also, youth will participate in community projects which support our “happy actions” strategy that will benefit the community and increase participation in the Seattle Area Happiness Initiative.
Who can participate?
Social Moguls is an out-of-school, academic-enrichment program for youth in grades 9 through 12 that reside in the Greater Seattle Metropolitan region. We hope youth from all backgrounds and ability levels participate. We will specifically reach out to youth who are systemically “underserved” because they are neither “high achievers” nor “disciplinary cases.” Adolescent experts cite it is common for youth transitioning into young adulthood to experience anxiety caused by peer pressure, social isolation, decreased interest in school, and conflict with parents and authority figures. We hope we can balance these turbulent forces by guiding youth to greater emotional intelligence and help them explore purpose and meaning, their role in the community while extending their positive social network and thereby promoting greater social connectedness, confidence and resilience.
How will youth benefit?
Youth benefit because the program focuses on helping them to identify deeper more intrinsic values and personal assets which give them a greater sense of purpose and meaning, competency and community engagement.
Positive outcomes for youth are:
- Youth experience a greater sense of happiness and well-being
- Improvement in academic performance
- Youth will increase their interest and engagement in their community
We will measure our progress toward these outcomes by using the HI survey pre and post, academic metrics and the number of completed community projects.
